Audi has announced an A3 TDI model for the US market to launch early in 2010. Utilizing virtually the same engine as the 2009 VW Jetta TDI, the A3 will provide over 40 mpg on the highway. The A3 is Audi’s smalled sedan in the US market and has been a popular alternative to cars like the BMW 1 Series and Mini Cooper S. This new model will be in a market virtually on its own however, with few other small luxury cars offering a diesel engine.
The Audi A3 is no doubt a hip slick and cool car with LED daytime running lights and tail lights, sophisticated suspension, and one of the best interiors in its class. The 2.0 TDI clean diesel engine comes mated with “S tronic”, a dual clutch manual/automatic transmission. Initially it will be offered in front-wheel drive. Horsepower is 140 with 236 lb-ft torque. The in-line 4 cylinder features common rail direct injection and piezoelectric injectors and will be 50-state legal with no after-treatment system required.
The A3 TDI will come standard with features like Sirius satellite radio, leather seating and steering wheel, and a nice set of 17” alloy wheels. Pricing will be announced closer to launch time but you should expect it to come in at a slight premium over the gasoline powered A3. With Audi also announcing the 3.0 liter TDI Q7 SUV to debut this fall it is safe to say that they are getting back into the diesel business with both feet.
