Mazda is will be showing off a new diesel engined CX-7 SUV next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Euro spec model will offer an alternative to the current 2.3 liter DI Turbo that American model CX-7’s also have.
The diesel variant features Mazda’s MZR-CD 2.2 liter diesel engine. Helping it be a “clean diesel” will be a “selective catalytic reduction” system (SCR) . The system substantially reduces nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions, which helps the diesel CX-7 to achieve outstanding eco-friendly performance that complies with strict Euro5 emissions regulations. The diesel CX-7 will launch in Europe this October, and in Australia in November.
Mazda’s emissions system uses the same “AdBlue“ urea as one with a many the VW, Audi, and Mercedes Benz models require. A chemical reaction converts approximately 40 percent of nitrous oxides into harmless nitrogen. The AdBlue storage tank is located under the luggage area. Mazda will be the first Japanese manufacturer to use this system.
The new diesel model will likely offer considerably better fuel mileage than the current 2.3 liter DI turbo gas engine which is actually known for being a gas hog. The American model CX-7 barely gets better gas mileage than a V8 powered Chevy Tahoe.
It is unknown at this time whether Mazda would have any plans to bring the diesel power train to the US market however, and honestly unlikely unless Ford also jumps in and helps spread the cost around by offering the power plant in some of its models.
