Volkswagen showed off its latest foray into the push the envelope class of concept cars at Frankfurt this week. The L1 diesel-hybrid concept proves that VW is still looking forward like no other manufacturer.
Calling it the most fuel efficient car in the world, the L1 concept is somewhere between a car and a quardra-cycle, weighing only about 850 lbs. The body is made of light-weight carbon fiber and measures about 150 inches long, which compares to a Toyota Yaris.
Powering the L1 is what most people consider the next logical step for hybrid cars, a TDI engine. The rear mounted 800cc TDI / E-Motor is mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission. The combined power output is approximately 27hp in “eco-mode” and 39hp in “sport-mode”. It can also reach a top speed of 100+ mph.
The astounding 170 mpg efficiency is achieved through the combination of light weight, aerodynamics, a start stop system, and generous use of battery power. The narrow single seat behind single seat profile creates less profile to push through the wind, with a glider being the inspiration behind the design.
