Nissan has introduced a diesel version of it’s Murano SUV in Europe. Unlike the states, having diesel engine in your lineup is a necessity to get any traction in the market.
Easily achieving 30+ mpg, the diesel Murano has a 2.5 liter four cylinder turbocharged engine. Called the YD25 engine the engine produces about 188hp and 333 lb-ft torque. Upgrades make the engine quieter and smoother including a high pressure common rail fuel system
Other high tech goodies like a variable vane turbocharger with electric control allow for on the fly tuning in a variety of conditions. In Europe the engine has a particulate filter but if Nissan ever saw fit to bring it to the states, would likely require a urea injection system.
A departure from the norm, Nissan will offer the diesel Murano only with a six-speed automatic transmission. Most diesels in Europe are available first with a manual and then sometimes with an auto. In any case, the Murano is a much more up-market vehicle across the pond than here in the US, so it makes sense.
But like many of these stories we bring you about the latest greatest new diesel product in other parts of the world, it is not likely to ever see the light of day here in the US. As it remains, most automakers still live in their little fairy tale worlds where “Americans just don’t like diesels”.
