BMW has jumped full force into the diesel hum in America offering a high-performance version of their 3.0 liter twin-turbo inline six diesel engine in both the acclaimed 3-Series sedan as well as their popular X5 SUV.
The BMX X5 Xdrive35d comes at a $3700 premium over the gas powered six-cylinder Xdrive30i but $5000 less than the V8 powered Xdrive48i model. So the diesel fits right in the middle price wise. Included of course are all the expected BMW features, handling prowess, and all-wheel drive that is biased to the rear wheels.
When BMW chose to bring diesel to America it took a more risky approach, equipping their cars with a more expensive performance oriented engine. The 3.0 liter DOHC, twin-turbo diesel engine has 265 horsepower and an axle twisting 425 lb-ft of torque at 1,750rpm.
With 5225lbs, that torque is your best friend. And though the X5 weighs nearly the same as a Chevy Tahoe, the diesel version will sprint from 0-60 in 6.9 seconds according to BMW. That ‘s Mercedes AMG-like performance for an SUV. And the most important number of all is its 26-mpg highway efficiency.
Likely one of the high-techiest diesel engines available in the US, the BMW 3.0 liter unit features two turbo-chargers. A small turbocharger first cuts in at low engine speeds. Thanks to its low inertia, this turbocharger develops boost (and extra power) in response to even the smallest movement to the gas pedal and without the slightest delay. As engine speed increases, the second, larger turbocharger cuts in.
Piezo injectors and common rail fuel system is quiet while a particulate filter keeps the smoke to a minimum. The BMW X5 also uses a urea pretreatment system to chemically clean the emissions making it 50-state legal.
Inside of course you are treated to genuine wood trim, leatherette seating with the option for sumptuous leather, and all the good things that BMW brings to the table. Top quality trim and design abounds and third row seating allows up to a capacity of seven passengers.
