Mazda6 To Get Diesel Power In 2012

At the New York Auto Show this week Mazda of America announced a new line of power-train technology called “Sky Concept” that will make its way into their vehicles in the next two years. Of note to us, they stated that the new “SKY-D” turbo-diesel engines will in fact be introduced in America starting in 2012.

The word “sky” reflects Mazda’s desire to deliver driving pleasure while helping to ensure blue skies and clean air for future generations. To achieve this, Mazda engineers have adopted a “sky’s the limit” approach, and are embracing unconventional thinking in their pursuit of ultimate power train efficiency.

“Improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions is not just a goal at Mazda, it’s part of our business plan; we will make vehicles that are safer for our environment,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “We will increase our fuel economy globally by 30 percent by 2015 and offer affordable eco-friendly vehicles to all Mazda customers, not to just a limited segment of the market. The SKY Concept power trains will play a big part in making this happen.”

As we discussed in our recent article on the Mazda CX-7 Diesel from Europe, the new generation of diesels will out-perform the current 2.2 liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel. That engine powers the SUV with 170hp and an astounding 295lb. ft. of torque. Combined with the new diesel will be a unique six-speed automatic transmission that offers driving feel comparable to a dual clutch transmission, while also improving fuel economy by five percent compared to Mazda’s current automatic six-speed transmission.

At the press conference Mazda said that the first model to get diesel power-trains in America will be the mid-sized Mazda6 sedan in 2012. They even went so far as to claim the car will get as much as 43 mpg. With the Mazda6 being similar in size to the VW Jetta, if not larger, this would be a significant feat. The Ford Fusion Hybrid currently achieves 41mpg.

Other models that could also get the engine would include their larger SUV’s such as the aforementioned CX-7 and the larger CX-9.
