BMW of America has confirmed rumors they will be bringing a diesel 5-Series diesel to the US as a 2011 or 2012 model. While BMW has given no details about the hardware that will be under the hood, it is likely that the engine will be one in the same with the inline sixes currently being offered now in the 3-Series and X5.
That engine is the 3.0 liter DOHC, twin-turbo diesel engine with 265 horsepower and an axle twisting 425 lb-ft of torque at 1,750rpm. The engine gives 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds in Europe in the 5-series. The move will enable BMW to better compete with Mercedes Benz in the US market by offering a near equal selection of cars and SUV’s with a diesel.
Mercedes Benz offers the E-Class mid-size sedan with a diesel as they do the R-Class crossover as well as the ML & G-Class SUV’s. BMW has taken a more performance oriented approach to their diesel offerings in the US, with an emphasis on power over pure efficiency.
While the automotive press has clapped their hands, buyers have winced at the price premium that does not offer a lot of bang for the buck as it relates to enhanced mpg.
