For markets outside the US, Range Rover has announced the launch of an all new 4.4 liter turbo-diesel V8. The new engine is based on the same one that Ford was planning to introduce in the Ford F-150 light-duty trucks in the US, but had canceled the program. With the sale of Range Rover last year, the new high-tech power plant will live on in the top-drawer luxury SUV.
The “LR-TDV8” 4.4-liter engine has parallel sequential turbo charging. Range Rover says the LR-TDV8 combines superior power and massive torque with unparalleled levels of refinement. The new engine is cleaner too, delivering increased fuel economy and lower emissions than before. Range Rover claims a combined 30 mpg, making this the most efficient Range Rover ever.
With 313 horsepower and 516 ft-lb of torque, the Range Rover’s new powertrain is mated to an all-new electronically controlled 8-speed automatic gearbox from ZF. Tuned by Land Rover engineers to combine silky smooth shifting with exceptionally rapid response and outstanding fuel economy, the diesel Range Rover can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds.
The 2011 Range Rover is further enhanced by improvements to the “Terrain Response“ system in the form of Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control. Inside the cabin there are optional illuminated treadplates for the front doors, new transmission controls for the diesel model, and improvements to the entertainment system. Detail improvement to the exterior include new ‘Jupiter’ grilles and side vents for the diesel models. A new Exterior Design Pack option gives customers the chance to give their Range Rover a more individual look and new colors and wheels have been added to the range.
So when will it come to America? The same question has been asked before of many diesel models that never come to our shores. But one thing that stands as a beacon of hope is that Ford had a US spec version of this engine all but ready to go for F-150 production. That leaves some room for hope that a diesel Range Rover for the US is not an impossible task.
